“A Summer-Eating”

For the July wine tasting Bryan is recreating a meal served by the great wine-drinker and man of letters George Saintsbury (1845-1933).

Saintsbury, according to Wikipedia, was best known as a scholar during his lifetime, he is perhaps best remembered today for his Notes on a Cellar-Book (1920), one of the great testimonials to drink and drinking in wine literature.

The dust jacket on a more recent re-issue of the book better describes why Bryan likes him so … “it’s also the quirkiest, the most baffling and inscrutable, and the most flagrantly opinionated.”  Sound familiar?
